Alex (1976 – September 6, 2007) had a vocabulary of over 100 words, but was exceptional in that he appeared to have understanding of what he said. For example, when Alex was shown an object and was asked about its shape, color, or material, he could label it correctly. He could understand that a key was a key no matter what its size or color, and could figure out how the key was different from others. One day, he asked what color he was, and learned “grey” after being told the answer six times. This made him the first non-human animal to have ever asked an existential question. [x]

Alex the parrot is actually one of my favorite animal intelligence stories/examples. What a smart birb.

Why am I emotional right now?

I had thw pleasure of presenting her findings in my Evolutionary psych class this semester and Alex was a very smart birb. Some more fun facts! He had object permanence and could count up to 7. He understood concepts of bigger and smaller, and he could use the word no properly!!! And he’d also get an attitude if he didn’t get what he wanted and hed keep interrupting the task that he was meant to be working on at that moment to ask for something else or to go to a different location in the room!!!! He was a Sassy Burb

Alex would also interrupt other African greys they were trying to teach words to with the correct answer, so he would get the reward instead. I remember reading about him correcting the other birds’ pronunciation on ‘v’ sounds, as that’s a hard one for birds to make. Usually when they were trying to pronounce the number seven. He’d say the word as it should sound and then say something like “say it correctly”.

This bird also invented his own words for things. He did not know what an apple was, but he was familiar with cherries and bananas. So what did he decide an apple was? A banerry. Because it was red like a cherry but light on the inside like a banana or something. And he was so set in his ways that he was correct in saying it was a banerry and not an apple, that he would try to teach his human companions how to say it. In the same slow pronunciation that they would do at him when teaching him new words.

hope even if im slow af you will able to use nicknames i wrote about….

since russian is pretty much a big and rich
language, we have a lot of ways to express our love and intimacy through
nicknames to loved ones! not only name based nicknames, but those affectionate
terms as well

actually, we do use literal translations of ‘baby’
and ‘darling’ referring to loved ones

baby can be translated as малыш (malish) or детка (detka), or пупсик (pupsik) (pupsik sounds very ridiculous tbh but i think victor would
use this one) and can be referred to both male, female and nonbinary folks, despide
the fact малыш and пупсик are grammatically male gendered words,
and детка – grammatically female gendered.

with darlingdear its different, its very
gendered term, so you have to use дорогой (dorogoi) to male lover, дорогая (dorogaya) to a female, and дорогие (dorogie) to someone who uses
theythem pronounce (but theythem pronounce as singular pronounce is very complicated
topic in russian, it really is, so i will talk mostly about shehe, alright?)

there is another word from дорогой – дорогуша (dorogusha), grammatically female gendered,
but can used towards anyone, usually in less tender, but teasing way

i think darlingdear in meaning as affectionate
nickname can be translated as милый
(miliy) as well. милый literally translates as ‘cute’ and ‘nice’, but when
russian uses it to exactly refer to someone they love its usually can be translated
as ‘darling’ in english
милый (miliy)
is for males and милая (milaya) is for females. (theythem is милые (miliye))

talking about affectionate adjectives, we also
use ‘loved’, like’ loved by me’, and its любимый (lyubimiy) for males, любимая( lyubimaya) for females, любимые (lyubimiye) for theythem

сладкий (sladkiy) is also common affectionate
nickname, analogue of it in english is sweetie i believe, since сладкий translates as ‘sweet’. female form is сладкая (sladkaya), сладкие (sladkiye) for theythem

we also have similar nicknames to ‘sunshine’
for instance, but we dont literally call people ‘sunshine’, but just ‘sun’ – солнце (solntse), or with diminutive
suffix to sound even cuter – солнышко (solnishko)

NOW LETS MOVE ON TO OUR ORIGINAL RUSSIANS
NICKNAMES

we actually use shit tons of different nicknames.
especially the most favorite by russians are animals, like every russian couple
is a fucking mini zoo: we call our loved ones зая (zaya)заяц(zayats)зайчонок(zaychonok) – different forms of ’bunny’ ; котя(kotya)котик(kotik)котенька(koten’ka)киса(kisa) – kitty; медвежонок (medvezhonok) – diminutive form of ’bear’
; рыбка (ribka) – diminutive
for ’fish’… and more, but зая is like the ultimate affectionate term and a lot of russians
actually hate it, despite it being so popular lmao

in victor and yuuri’s case victor probably
would call yuuri порося (porosya), поросенок (porosyonok),поросеночек (porosyonochek). all of these words are different variations of ’piggylittle
piggypiglet’. we also usually call порося those people who are very messy, but its in very
tender way

i imagine when yuuri eats katsudon and some
pieces of rice are on his cheeks, victors gently wipes them away, calling yuuri
not less gentler ’порося моя’ (porosya moya – ‘my piglet’).

ALSO I BET VICTOR WOULD ALSO CALL YUURI ФУНТИК (FUNTIK). Funtik is a
character from old popular soviet cartoon Adventures of Piglet Funtik AND ITS
CUTE

besides animals we can call people dear to us as:

золотце (zolotse) – ‘someone gold’ or you
can translate it as ‘goldie’. a very common term in russian

голубка (golubka) – woopsie
its an animal as well, i mean, a bird – a very sweet version of ‘pigeon’

крошка (kroshka) –
could be literally translated as ‘crumb’ or ‘little one’

куксиккукуся кукуся (kuksikkukusikkukusya) – i honesty didnt
know what exactly this word meaned till i googled it right now: ‘as original
term kukusik is someone very young, infantile and naive, who dont have much
life experience and etc’, but this word lost this meaning and is usually used
as affectionate term to loved one

i bet victor would call yuuri котлетка (kotletka), diminutive form of ‘cutlet’

or щекастик (shekastik)! means ‘someone with cute cheeks’ and
this one isnt very common, but it sounds
very cute and if you hc chubby yuuri, this nickname would fit him a lot!!

other examples:

душа моя (dusha moya) – ‘my soul’

свет моих очей (svet moih ochey) – ‘the light of my eyes’. a pretty old one, im not
sure someone uses it on daily basis, usually characters in old russian literature
would referred like that. but is sounds very romantic and i personally love it

любовь моя (lyubov moya) – ‘my love’

мой хороший хороший мой (moi horoshiyhoroshiy moi) for males; моя хорошаяхорошая моя (moya
horoshayahoroshya moya) for females – translates as ‘my good’, meaning ‘my
dear’ or smth

(radost’ moya) – ‘my joy’

you noticed constant moi or moya in last ones? thats
right, russian affectionate terms are very often accompanied with word ‘my’ (моймоя (moimoya)), and sometimes some nicknames
arent usually used separated from it!

russians usually use my + nickname combination to
sound more intimate and show closeness to called person, which well is pretty
obvious, i know, but we really do use it a lot

some of previous examples sounds even better and
are more used with ‘my’

мой (moi) is for grammatically male gendered
words, моя (moya) for grammatically
female gendered words and моё (moyo) – grammatically neutral gendered
words tho

рыба моя (riba moya) – ‘my fish’. yes we call people like that and its cute in
our understanding

зая моя (zaya moya) – ‘my bunny’

My ball python, Harker, is really scared of this one stapler.

Every time he sees it, he balls up.

I was grading today and sure enough, the stapler was still scary.

However, for the first time, I introduced a second stapler!

He was nervous at first…

But it didn’t take him long to warm up to it.

Pretty soon it became his best friend!

There was nothing the new stapler couldn’t do!

Including protecting him from the other stapler.

The moral of the story?

My snake is a weirdo.

Update: Today I took Harker to my office, where he met another stapler.

He was fairly apathetic at first, but eventually they got on pretty well!

This stapler was smaller than either of the others, but one thing was sure: this stapler was definitely not scary!

Am I any closer to understanding my snake’s strange relationship with staplers?

Absolutely not.

UPDATE: it’s 2016 and I’m pleased to announce that he’s FINALLY gotten over his fear of the stapler!

He likes it now!

Okay listen, guys.

We’ve currently got 5 Yuri!! On Ice episodes out, and like in all my moments of solitude recently, I’ve been thinking about the show. And quite suddenly, something hit me. There are all these speculations about how it will all end, will Viktor stay/go, will Yuuri follow, will they become a couple, will the fans get an actual kiss? And tbh, as much as I like to think about it, there is just no way to know. It could go in any direction, there’s no way to tell.

But then, I remembered something from the first episode, and I ended up putting together this theory/prediction, that I’m actually really excited about because it seems likely!

I’m sure you all recall Viktor’s performance of ‘Stay Close to Me’

Which we see Minako comment on.

She says this and then comments on how the performance would suit a more naive man, which we all agree to be Yuuri.

The program ‘Stay Close to Me’ is a plea to a lover, a desperate appeal to one special person to remain by your side. Since Viktor isn’t known to have a special someone when he skates this, only many many fans, the song doesn’t quite have that personal touch.

But as he skates, we have Yuuri back in Japan doing the same routine.

We don’t see the routine fully skated either by just Victor or Yuuri. We see parts of the routine performed by each of them, and since they’re performed identically (as Yuko says) we can assume that what we see Viktor do, Yuuri is doing it too, and what Yuuri does, Viktor is skating that as well.

So I invite you to look at this part:

Yuuri skates this section of ‘Stay Close to Me’ right by the rink side, directly at Yuko, the only person there.

He skates this routine in honour of his childhood friend, who he most likely had a crush on at some point. Someone who supported his skating and who in a way introduced him to Viktor, through his skating. When Yuuri finished the performance, he says ‘I wanted to get my love for skating back. I thought I could remember how it was when I copied Viktor with you.’

Yuuri admitted at the beginning of the first ep that he wanted to meet Viktor as an equal. Viktor has always been very important to him, and skating his routines with Yuko was always a way for Yuuri to feel closer to him.

So the song ‘Stay Close to Me’ that Yuuri skated was directed at Yuko the person in the rink, but it represented his feelings for Viktor and skating (as the two were completely intertwined, I believe).

That was the difference from when Viktor performed it. I think he saw and understood this when he watched the video of Yuuri skating online, his body making music.

Now, let’s go back to the very beginning of Yuri!! On Ice, the opening scene as a matter of fact.

It’s not unusual for opening scenes to be either flashbacks of a character’s past, or the very end of the story. A bit of a ‘this is where I am now, and I’m going to tell you the story of how it happened’.

I believe YOI actually does both.

We have a younger Viktor skating, who turns into an older Viktor.

The younger, long-haired Viktor is clearly of the past, but it’s not a concrete memory (Yuuri’s there too). It embodies how Yuuri has watched Viktor skate from a young age.

When Young!Viktor skates, he gives Yuuri his back, he doesn’t face him. He doesn’t know him, they’re not on the same level.

But when he moves into the shadow and then we have the older Viktor, he’s looking right at Yuuri. He knows him, acknowledges him.

And for the rest of the routine, he doesn’t take his eyes off of Yuuri. He has eyes only for him.

I think this opening scene has shown us the past and the future. During the scene, Yuuri speaks of Viktor and says “He never fails to surprise me. Ever since I first saw his skating, it’s been an unending chain of surprises”. To me, this sounds like the words of a Yuuri at the end of the series, recounting how much he’s gone through with Viktor.

The opening scene is the Viktuuri relationship before and after.

What most got me about it though, was this part of Viktor’s skating:

I didn’t realise it at first, but it’s exactly the same as when Yuuri skates ‘Stay Close to Me’. We don’t see Viktor perform this part in the contest, we only see it from Yuuri’s performance in the Ice Castle skating ring, but we know this is Viktor’s ‘Stay Close to Me’.

So Viktor is skating this routine in the opening scene, either symbolising the future, or being an actual scene from the future.

And just as when Yuuri skated this part right by Yuko and all that she represented at the time, Viktor is skating this right up to Yuuri.

He reaches his hand out towards the person he wants to stay close to.

And that person is clearly Yuuri, he’s physically there. You can see Viktor’s hands reach for him.

So my theory is this.

Yuuri skated ‘Stay Close to Me’ the way it should have been skated, a desperate plea to be close to the one person that matters and the love for skating that bloomed from his feelings. Viktor couldn’t quite do that because he didn’t have a special person, and he was losing his way in terms of his love for skating, as Yurio said.

I believe that the opening scene was premonition, and that at the very end of the series, Viktor will skate ‘Stay Close to Me’. And do it justice. He will skate the routine that started it all, that brought him to Yuuri, but he will skate it the way it’s meant to be skated. Because by then, Yuuri will be his special someone.

In this intimate setting, a private rink at night, possibly Ice Castle, he will skate for Yuuri to show him his feelings. I believe Viktor is more of a man of action when it comes to things like this. For example, he tells Yuuri at the beach that he’ll work him hard because that’s how he shows his love. I think instead of words maybe, Viktor will show his love to Yuuri, his appreciation for him, by skating ‘Stay Close to Me’ for him and only him.

I’m not sure what might follow, but I think it will be a while before we get a confession out of Viktor, and I think this is how it will come to be. Because being able to skate the routine the way it should be would mean that he’s found his way, that Yuuri’s led him there. For these two, it’s love and it’s ice skating. And by skating ‘Stay Close to Me’, Viktor will show Yuuri that he’s given him both, and that he wants to stay by his side, hopefully forever.

A few things have been brought to my attention which I decided to add in case some people haven’t seen or heard yet.

Firstly,

It would seem, judging by the shape of the windows on the right, and how the light pours in, that the intimate skating ring in question most likely is Ice Castle. In which case, this just makes it better. Where it all began, where Yuuri skated the routine that started their journey, it was there. It would be like closure, coming full circle to finish it there as well.

Secondly (and most notably), the Oh! SkaTra!!! Yuri!!! on ICE soundtrack list has been released, and the songs are numbered in order of appearance on the show. The very first song is of course ‘Stay Close to Me’, which Kudo Kazuma sings. The very last song that we’ll be hearing on Yuri!! On Ice has been revealed to be… ‘Stay Close to Me– duet version’. It would seem that alongside Kudo Kazuma who sings as Tenor, Matsubara Rinko sings Soprano. It is a genuine duet.

My feels have overflown with this extra piece of info. The prediction could very well come to pass, Viktor skating his feelings–

–and a much stronger Yuuri joining in.

It’s going to be a song by actual people, with real words so there’ll be no misinterpretation when that comes out. From ‘Stay Close to Me’, the single version we’ve heard, my very basic Italian can catch the words ‘stammi vicino, non te ne andare’ which translates to ‘stay close to me, don’t go.’

I can envision a duet where the soprano singer replies. The song could become the plea, ‘stay close to me’, and the response, ‘I will’. ‘Don’t go’; ‘I won’t’.

In a way, it’s actually even better now. Because as I said, I didn’t know what might happen next, but if Yuuri responded this way, if he meets Viktor where he is this time…well then, the Viktuuri will reach a full conclusion. Because Viktor will have given– is already giving– Yuuri just as much as Yuuri will give him. I’ve no doubt Yuuri will want to stay by Viktor’s side forever too.

I haven’t read it since seventh grade, but my favorite part of Twilight that I remember is the “radioactive spider” line bc it implies that

First of all, I’m actually almost certain that Carlisle pays taxes. That’s just such a Carlisle thing to do. He probably does them all himself late at night sitting in his study wearing a pair of glasses he doesn’t need. “Our dad is weird,” Emmett says. Rosalie rolls her eyes, “he’s not our dad.”

THAT SAID, yes, it’s totally ridiculous that Twilight takes place in high school. I think the concept itself would have been 100% more entertaining if Bella had been a a junior transfer student from a southwest community college to University of Washington in Seattle, commuting every day from Forks, where she finds out the weird dude from her college chem lab lives too (I’ve commuted 40+ minutes to school, it’s doable).

Not only is this more believable, but it would also be a lot more entertaining and potentially funny for Bella to just slowly realize she has at least one class a week with each of these weird-ass pale kids from her hometown.

Edward’s in chem with her. She accidentally sits down next to Rosalie in calc before she recognizes the resemblance. Emmet’s an overwhelmingly enthusiastic Fitness Management major who starts sitting next to her in Western Civ after he notices her talking to Edward. “Are you pre-med? You seem like you might be pre-med. My dad’s a doctor!”

Alice tries desperately to help her in a wheel-tossing class Bella had to take as an art elective after she put off choosing an art elective until it was the only one left. She asks herself daily why she didn’t take Art History. Jasper is there too. He doesn’t look like he’d be into pottery, but it seems like he’s into anything Alice is into (I still argue it’s literally impossible that he functions in public at all, but we’ll roll with it anyway).

Make Esme a professor at the school, too. Adorable. She’s that Mom Professor everyone loves and and respects (and also sort of fears). She always excuses absences as long as you send an email.

Instead of collecting graduation caps and gowns, they collect degrees.

Imagine Emmet bringing up the time he was almost a doctor, but having to actually be around the patients ended it. Carlisle says “I warned you the entire time you were in undergrad.”

After a few weeks of plot devices similar to the actual book (near-death parking lot experiences, etc.), Bella runs into Esme at the grocery store in Forks (I actually love that they buy groceries) and realizes my god, these people live here?

It would also make more sense that Bella were moving back in with her dad despite hating the Pacific Northwest so intensely. None of that sort of quirky “minor league baseball” stuff. She absolutely Would Not live in a dorm with some random roommate, so going to school where she could live with her dad was about all that made sense. The in-state tuition to a great university was just an added bonus.

It would also make the romance more enjoyable. NOW, a lot of people complain that a 100+ year old would have no reason to be interested in a high schooler in the original series, but I believe it’s very implied that all of the Vampires aren’t just physically frozen at their age, but they’re mentally and emotionally stuck forever as well.

Which is, you know, horrible. That’s why some of them are so damn angsty and emotionally volatile. That’s why Bella insists that Edward turn her sooner than later. Bruh, if you wait until she’s 25, she’s going to out-grow your maturity-level.

STILL, I think a romance between 21-23 year olds would have been better, by a little bit.

It would also make a lot more sense for them to be in college because of the way they function. They wouldn’t all be eating (or not eating) together in the only cafeteria as the entire student-body tried to pretend to not stare.

Less people would notice their eerie resemblance, their coordinated absences, and their overall weirdness, which would make more apparent Bella’s alleged super-strong powers of observation when she started putting things together.

Instead of there randomly being a sudden spike in criminals in that little town, Edward could dramatically rescue Bella’s naive ass from a party her human friends dragged her to.

I could go on, but this is eventually going to become and entire College Au rewrite of Twilight in excruciating detail. So I’ll stop.

Twilight had potential. That’s the sad thing. Where the different Cullen kids (and parents) came from was very intriguing. Vampires hiding in plain sight is a concept with all kinds of endless possibility. Hell, even Bella in the hands of a halfway skilled writer could have had an interesting story. The narrative was just…so…stilted, the emotions so…damn…shallow, it was unreadable. (At least for me.) Meyer had some good ideas. The execution was just ghastly.

Eye floaters are essentially debris that float around in the vitreous humour of the eye, brought about by aging, myopia, and/or various eye conditions. Nearly 70-80% of ALL PEOPLE will experience spots, strings, fog, or worm-like debris in their visual field at one point or another (shadows of this debris cast upon the retina). They may be black, white, gray, or nearly transparent. There are no warnings. It can happen to anybody—it will most likely happen to you—and while it can be a sign of retinal detachment, it more often wreaks havoc on one’s mental health. There is a latent belief perpetuated in the eye health industry that floaters are completely benign, or, minor annoyances; however, thousands upon thousands of individuals experience despondency and anxiety to debilitating levels, triggering or exacerbating mental conditions such as OCD, GAD, and, commonly, depression.

It is appalling and utterly gut-wrenching to hear from doctors, optometrists, and ophthalmologists that floaters are inconsequential unless they obstruct the view enough to merit a vitrectomy—an incredibly invasive surgery that involves sucking out the vitreous and replacing it with a saline fluid. This surgery is risky, uncommon, expensive, and was not even developed for the purposes of getting rid of floaters. We have entire industries dedicated to benign manifestations of the aging process. Wrinkles, skin tags, moles, and hair loss to name a few. Of all the senses, vision grounds us, furnishes our existence, gives richness to the world that is incomparable. For the young people that experience eye floaters, it may be even more devastating.

I believe that it is possible to overturn the misconceptions surrounding eye floaters. A safe, non-surgical treatment for eye floaters has the potential to be incredibly lucrative given the millions of people that experience them. I do not know anybody who would not consider vision (or lack of) one of the most integral parts in the way they experience the world. Eye On Vision, an organization devoted to eliminating visual snow and eye floaters, has set up a research campaign at http://www.gofundme.com/floaters. They are looking for an enzymatic treatment to dissolve floaters. They have had success in funding visual snow research and have contact with researchers who would be absolutely dedicated to working on the eradication of eye floaters given the funds and opportunity. I implore you to check out the cause. The fact that no research is being done REALLY FUCKING SUCKS.

Can you imagine never again seeing your favourite sights clearly and without obstruction?
