One thing I’ve been seeing a lot on Tumblr from older fans is the notion that fandom is wankier/more toxic on Tumblr than it ever was during the supposed good old days on LJ/DW and man–that is just not true. The current wanks are different in that they’re co-opting social justice language and have a weird focus on “purity” or whatever, but ship wars have been happening since literally FOREVER (check the old school Harry Potter fandom, or the Ray Wars in Due South, or literally every major fandom that has ever existed).
People in fandom have always been insanely over the top about their ships. What’s happening now is that we’re not able to f-lock and stick to our own corners the way we did before. So, for example, if I’m a fan of Spock/Uhura in Star Trek AOS, if I go out on Tumblr and search by that pairing tag, I’m just as likely to see awful racist garbage as I am to see a nice piece of fanart to reblog. So yeah, that is a mess–but it’s a mess based in the structure of the platform we’re using, not because the good old fandom days were filled with people that were just INHERENTLY more tolerant and “nicer” than current fans are today.
I’m just really suspicious and wary of the nostalgia for the good old days of fandom, because I think that it’s not only inaccurate, it completely dismisses the progress that has been made in fandom since. You know what we didn’t have back then? A widely accepted content warnings system for triggering content. Open discussion of racism/sexism/homophobia in fandom and fic, and how we can and should be doing better. The good old days a) weren’t that good to begin with and b) you can’t try and bring back the stuff you liked without also acknowledging the parts of fandom that were awful.
I’m not one to usually comment on stuff like this. But I would like to offer a possible, reasonable reason as to why this nostalgia exists.
It’s deeper than secondhand embarrasment. It’s deeper than complaining. Adults in fandom are quite literally tired and scared. And for good reason.
Before I go into the TD;LR version of it all, I’d like to acknowledge that my opinion on big fandom events of old is not the same experience as someone say, 35, or even up to higher ages if we are talking groundbreading, decades old fandoms like Star Trek. The “old fandom days” that people usually feel nostalgia over are the 2000s. In the time I first joined online fandom in that era, I was only in my early teens. My experiences were not that of older fans who might have witnessed bigger battles than I did, though I have read about them in the past tense. (Parts of Potter fic stolen and published, the Anne Rice debacle, etc.) I do also know of the uncomfortable undertones of old taboo fandom, and how old “warnings” from back then were homophobic and much more.
(TD;LR) BUT, I stick to my take: it IS still worse now. It is absolutely still worse now, even taking into account the problems from before.
In fandom now?
People being bullied to suicide is commonplace.
Actors, writers, and producers getting death threats is commonplace.
Putting needles into cookies of a fanartist? Literal, honest to god, attempted murder??? is something that gets lost in the mix of “hot takes.”
Some artists fear posting their work now. Because it’s so easy for some rabid fan to get ahold of their personal info and try to get their life stolen away from them, fired from their job, or worse.
Loss of livelihood, expensive costumes ruined by rabid fans (P5 debacle), suicide baiting, gore spamming, literally getting young children on video saying that a ship is p*edophilla to make a point, and again, actual attempted murder… ARE more than objectively worse than a few websites getting shut down and a couple people getting sued.
And as an adult in fandom, I do miss the way it was when I was young. And I feel with the current climate, that shouldn’t be surprising at all.
fandom as a whole is migrating away from a mutual appreciation of a story and towards an endless cycle of nitpicking and discourse and frankly that’s just Exhausting
Its just an endless stream of “you’re doing it wrong”. You’re reading this wrong, you’re appreciating this character wrong, you’re appreciating this character too much, you’re not appreciating this character enough, its not enough that I don’t like this pairing but it’s wrong to like it, you’re enjoying this wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.
Time to say it again: you can dislike or hate soukoku all you want but you owe me $20 if you say it’s because it’s abusive/unhealthy/they actually hate each other because saying that whether you ship it or not is a mischaracterization of their relationship and ignores canon character and relationship development and I don’t want to have to write 1000 word meta about why
you shit stop scrolling and read this, this is important, you need to know this for ur finals.
“Joker is so funny!!1!1!! 🤣🤣🤣 He’s one of my favorite villains because he’s not even a real bad guy lolz he’s just a weirdo hahaha 👏👏👏 He’s so funny and random I love how quirky he is 😍😍😍😍😍 I hate how people say the Joker is a bad person he’s just a funny weirdo 😝😝😝”
Joker:
*Beat 15 year old Jason Todd to death with a crowbar*
*Abused and emotionally manipulated poor Harley for years*
*Shot Barbara Gordon in the spine and paralyzed her before stripping her naked and taking photos in an effort to drive Jim Gordon insane*
*Once skinned a man alive out of spite*
*In Injustice, tricked Superman into brutally murdering Lois Lane – the love of his life – as well as their unborn child*
*Literally shaved his own face off and wore it as a mask for what reason???*
*Raped a woman just to get back at her husband*
*Blew up a school building full of innocent children*
*Tortured and brainwashed 13 year old Tim Drake and turned him into Joker Jr., which deeply traumatized him to the point of having a mental breakdown*
*Literally everything that happened during the dinner scene in Death of the Family*
>There are more incarnations of the Joker than I can count on my hands.
>Literally no one is saying this in the way you are framing it.
>A lot of the “new kids” in the fandom got into it via the Lego movies and games, where everything is comical and tame. Let them enjoy that purity without pushing your disgusting rape and death panels from adult comics on them.
>This is The Loki Discourse™ all over again.
>A lot of fans don’t have the money to keep up with a comic series that has been going on longer than they’ve been alive. It’s classist to expect all fans to be current with all details.
>A lot of fans don’t even CARE about those details. You can be a fan of something aesthetically. That does NOT make you less of a fan
>This is gatekeeping and pretentious waving around of fun facts like nerd cred badges.
>This is like the HQ post that mashed up all the “facts” from four entirely different Harleys.
>Let people enjoy fictional characters. They are not causing real-world harm.
>You know who has been going around saying he thinks fictional characters cause real world harm? Donald Trump. Don’t be that guy.
Let people enjoy the Joker however the hell they want, be it Romero, comic, graphic novel, or whatever else.
“i think loki is an interesting character who deserves development even though he has done horrible things”
“LOKI IS A PRECIOUS BABY WHO HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING WRONG!!!!!!! UWU ITS NOT HIS FAULT!!!!!!!!”
Has anyone ever actually seen someone do #2 in a non-joking way? Because I’ve been in the marvel fandom for almost ten years now. I’m pretty sure people who say #2 are fully aware that Loki is a piece of shit and are just…doing a slightly cringe version of the “I know this, and I love you” meme?
